A few days ago, we listed 15 Xbox indie games that we felt should be on your radar in August 2026, and the first of these was a new release called Kynseed – a title that’s proven extremely popular with players across multiple platforms.

This is a story-driven RPG in the style of something like Stardew Valley, and the developer is PixelCount Studios, which was founded by former Lionhead Studios veterans Charlton Edwards and Neal Whitehead. For those who aren’t aware, Lionhead Studios was the developer of the Fable games until its closure in 2016.

Early impressions for Kynseed on Xbox have been very positive according to the Xbox Store reviews, while the game also has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam and an incredible Metacritic score of 89 based on the older PC version.

Here’s what some of the Xbox Store reviews have been saying about it:

“Kynseed is a mix of Fable [and] Stardew Valley. It will keep you playing for a while in its old school pixelated, beautifully created, RPG sandbox world.”

“Painfully slow “tutorial” section but then super diverse gameplay possibilities. Def worth playing if you love cozy farm & life sim genres – with a unique to the genre dynasty feature. NOT another clone!”

“You will spend hoooooouuuuurrrsssss on this game if you’re a fan of Stardew Valley. Oh, but it’s so much more. I’ve only scratched the surface, but I’ve caught 200 fish, rode a pig, fought some baddies, read some lore, cooked, created potions, crafted tools, bet on a race, harvested crops, explored vast areas…. THERE’S SO MUCH TO DO. Amazing job PixelCount Studios! Absolutely in love with this one ❤️Thank You”

Our sister site, Nintendo Life, recently reviewed Kynseed and weren’t quite as positive with their feedback, but nevertheless dished out a “Good” 7/10 score.

You can see what they said in their conclusion for it below:

“Kynseed is bountiful with tasks to do, NPCs to please, and lands to discover. Oftentimes that quantity seems to take priority over quality, though that doesn’t always detract from the pops of dopamine you get when you complete a microtask. Stick with the lengthy Once Upon A Time and you’ll be rewarded with open-ended options for play – running a business, foraging for plants and exploring the lands with your pet, to name a few. One can reach Happily Ever After in around 80 hours, but you’re better off whiling away that time meandering along the many pebbled roads of Quill, onto whatever task it is you choose.”

It’s at least worth considering if you’re a fan of Fable and/or Stardew Valley then, right? Kynseed will set you back £19.99 / $24.99 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S if you’re interested, but unfortunately there’s no Xbox Play Anywhere support for it yet.

We’ll leave you with a closer look at the game below, and let us know in the comments if you’ve played it!
