One of the best ways to pass the time is by playing video games, because with hundreds or maybe thousands of new games coming out every month, there is always something to enjoy. Steam in particular is one of the best gaming companies out there, releasing many of these PC games for fans to sink their teeth into, such as Portal and Half-Life.

Known for their Steam sales and discounted games, right now is one of the best times to play video games, which is why we’ve compiled the best video games on Steam right now. Based on aspects such as trends, popularity, new releases, gameplay, design, narrative, visuals, critical acclaim, fan opinion, and overall quality, these ten titles are hot right now and the best must-play games. The games on this list aren’t Steam exclusives, but rather a selection of the best games on the platform.

    ‘Beast of Reincarnation’ (2026)

Game Freak is best known for the Pokémon games, which have received a lot of criticism over recent disappointing games. However, the studio has shifted gears into a stunning new game called Beast of Reincarnation. Taking place in post-apocalyptic Japan, players and their wolf set out on an adventure to bring balance to this broken world.

It hasn’t been out long, but Beast of Reincarnation has gotten mixed reviews all over the place. Some love its gorgeous graphics and blend of human and dog combat, which also brought up incredible boss fights, while others complained about the unskippable cutscenes and narrative. Overall, Beast of Reincarnation is a solid AAA game for players wanting something new on a grand scale.

‘Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced’ (2026)

This year has seen a lot of remakes and remasters, some of which have recently graced Steam, including Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. This remake of the classic game features Edward Kenway getting involved in a war between assassins and Templars while he searches for a mystical location known as the Observatory, among many other swashbuckling adventures.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a great remake built from the ground up to deliver the best possible visuals and updated controls. Now the definitive version to play the game, it streamlined annoying elements and made the controls easier to play. Black Flag is available to play on most systems, but that also includes Steam, and as a new big game, it is a must-buy on the platform.

    ‘Counter-Strike 2’ (2023)

    using-cover-in-counter-strike-2.jpgImage via Valve

Just because this list features the best video games on Steam right now doesn’t mean they all have to be new titles, because games like Counter-Strike 2 are still popular. This competitive shooter pits counter-terrorists and terrorists against each other in objective-based rounds such as rescuing hostages and defusing bombs.

Released in 2023, Counter-Strike 2 is a timeless video game that is still at the top of the charts in terms of playtime on Steam. It may be full of veteran gamers, but its popularity speaks for itself, making it a game that is always the best on Steam. The fluid controls, precise gunplay, and tactical combat pair nicely with strategic gameplay that can be played for hours on end.

    ‘Halo: Campaign Evolved’ (2026)

This list previously mentioned how remakes and remasters are bigger than ever in 2026, and that includes Halo: Campaign Evolved, which remakes the story mode of the very first Halo game. Crash-landing on a ringworld known as Halo, Master Chief and Cortana must fight the ensuing alien fleet while also discovering a dark new threat on the planet known as the Flood.

It is unfortunate that this game doesn’t include multiplayer, but being able to relive the story of Halo: Combat Evolved with modern graphics and revitalized design is a treat. The original is one of the best Xbox games of all time, but Halo: Campaign Evolved is on most platforms, including Steam. It has already sold well and might be the biggest game on this list.

    01

How do you lead when the stakes couldn’t be higher?
The way you lead under pressure is the most honest thing about you.

AI absorb everything — every variable, every pattern — and move only when I know the path forward.
BI read the room, make the call, and own the consequences. Hesitation costs more than mistakes.
CI rally people. A cause needs a voice, and I refuse to let fear be louder than conviction.
DI assess the threat, establish what needs doing, and get it done without waiting for permission.
EI don’t lead. I act. Others can follow or not — I’m already moving.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    02

What is your greatest strength in a crisis?
The quality that keeps you alive when everything else fails.

APrescience — the ability to see further ahead than anyone else and plan accordingly.
BImprovisation — I’m at my best when the plan falls apart and I have to invent a new one.
CConviction — I know what I’m fighting for, and that certainty doesn’t waver under fire.
DComposure — I stay functional when everyone around me is falling apart. Panic is a luxury.
EEndurance — I outlast things. I take the hit and keep moving long after others have stopped.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    03

What is the thing you’d sacrifice everything else for?
Your deepest motivation is your truest compass.

AThe survival and dignity of my people — even if I have to become something frightening to ensure it.
BThe safety of my crew — every single one of them. No one gets left behind.
CFreedom — for my people, for every world still crushed under the weight of an empire.
DThe truth — what actually happened, what’s actually out there, whether anyone believes me or not.
EThe one person — or the one memory — that still makes any of this worth surviving for.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    04

How do you relate to the people around you?
Who you are to others under pressure is who you really are.

AWith intensity and distance — I care deeply, but the weight I carry makes closeness complicated.
BWith warmth and irreverence — I take the mission seriously, not myself.
CWith directness and trust — I say what I mean, and I expect the people I work with to rise to it.
DWith professional care but clear limits — I’ll protect you, but I won’t pretend we’re family.
EWith wariness that slowly becomes loyalty — I don’t trust easily, but when I do, it holds.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    05

You’re facing a threat that no one else believes is real. What do you do?
How you respond when you’re the only one who sees it defines everything.

APrepare in silence. If they won’t listen, I’ll be ready when they finally have to.
BKeep pushing until someone listens — and if no one does, handle it myself.
CBuild the case, find the allies, and make the threat impossible to ignore.
DDocument everything. The truth matters even if no one believes it yet.
EStop trying to convince anyone. Survive it. That’s the only argument that counts.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    06

What has your heroism cost you personally?
Every hero pays. The question is what — and whether they’d pay it again.

AMy innocence — I’ve seen what I’m capable of, and I can’t unsee it.
BPeople I loved — the command chair has a view, but it’s a lonely one.
CA normal life — I gave up everything ordinary the moment I chose the cause.
DMy sense of safety — I know exactly what’s out there now, and I can’t pretend otherwise.
EAlmost everything — and I’m still not sure what I’m carrying it all for. But I keep going.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    07

How do you feel about the rules of the world you’re in?
Every hero has a relationship with the system. What’s yours?

AI understand them deeply — and I know exactly which ones must be broken, and why.
BI respect the spirit of them and bend the letter when the situation demands it.
CThe system is the problem. I’m not here to work within it — I’m here to dismantle it.
DI follow protocol until protocol stops being useful. Then I make the call myself.
EThe rules collapsed a long time ago. What’s left is instinct, and mine are reliable.

    NEXT QUESTION →

    08

When everything is on the line, what keeps you going?
The answer is the most honest thing about you.

ADestiny — or something that feels so much like it that the difference no longer matters.
BThe people on my ship — their faces, their trust, the fact that they’re counting on me.
CThe belief that what we’re fighting for is worth every sacrifice, including this one.
DSheer refusal to let it win — whatever it is. I don’t stop. That’s just who I am.
EI’m not sure anymore. But the road is still there, and I’m still on it.

    REVEAL MY HERO →

    Your Hero Has Been Identified
    Your Sci-Fi Hero Is…

Your answers point to the iconic sci-fi hero who shares your instincts, your values, and your particular way of facing the impossible.

    Arrakis · Dune

    Paul Atreides

You carry a weight most people would crumble under — the knowledge of what you’re capable of, and the burden of what you might have to become.

    • You see further ahead than others and you plan accordingly, even when the vision frightens you.
    • You are driven by loyalty to your people and a sense of destiny you didn’t ask for but can’t escape.
    • Paul Atreides is not simply a hero — he is someone who understands the cost of power and chooses to bear it anyway.
    • That gravity, that willingness to carry what others won’t, is exactly you.

    USS Enterprise · Star Trek

    Captain Kirk

You lead with instinct, warmth, and an absolute refusal to accept a no-win scenario — because you’ve always believed there’s a third option nobody else has thought of yet.

    • You take the mission seriously without ever taking yourself too seriously.
    • Your crew would follow you anywhere, not because you demand it, but because you’ve earned it.
    • Kirk’s genius isn’t tactical — it’s human. He reads people, bends rules with purpose, and wills outcomes into existence through sheer conviction.
    • That combination of warmth, audacity, and relentless optimism is unmistakably yours.

    The Rebellion · Star Wars

    Princess Leia

You are the kind of person who holds the line when everyone else is losing faith — not because you’re fearless, but because giving up simply isn’t something you’re capable of.

    • You lead through conviction. Your voice carries because your belief is unshakeable.
    • You gave up everything ordinary the moment you chose the cause, and you’ve never looked back.
    • Leia is not a supporting character in her own story — she is the moral centre of the entire rebellion.
    • That same fierce, principled, unbreakable core is what defines you.

    The Nostromo · Alien

    Ellen Ripley

You are not reckless, not grandiose, and not particularly interested in being anyone’s hero — you just refuse to stop when it matters.

    • You see threats clearly, you document the truth even when no one listens, and when the time comes you handle it yourself.
    • Ripley’s heroism is earned, not performed. She doesn’t have a speech — she has a flamethrower and a plan.
    • You share her composure under the worst possible pressure, and her refusal to pretend the monster isn’t there.
    • When it counts, you don’t flinch. That’s everything.

    The Wasteland · Mad Max

    Max Rockatansky

You have been through fire that would break most people — and what came out the other side is something the world underestimates at its peril.

    • You don’t ask for help, don’t need validation, and don’t wait for anyone to tell you the rules no longer apply.
    • Your loyalty, when it finally arrives, is absolute — but it’s earned in silence and tested in action, not in words.
    • Max is not a nihilist. He is someone who lost everything and found, against his will, that he still has something worth protecting.
    • That bruised, stubborn, ultimately human core is exactly yours.

    ↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ

‘The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu’ (2026)

Steam is known for its multiplayer games that groups of friends can sink hours into, and while it hasn’t blown up immensely, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is still a great summer title. A group of explorers set out into a Lovecraftian jungle in order to learn its lore and secrets, but they must fight against eerie creatures and hallucinations if they want to make it out alive.

Everyone can get behind a co-op survival horror, so suit up with your best friends and take on this haunting jungle that will mess with everyone’s heads. The sanity system is brilliant, showing enemies that might not be there, friends’ voices who didn’t say anything, or getting completely separated. The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is a paranoia-inducing video game that is a mind-bending masterpiece on Steam right now.

    ‘Palworld’ (2024)

    ‘Palworld’Image via Pocketpair

Game Freak was previously mentioned, and while they don’t release Pokémon games on Steam, the platform does have a replacement for fans called Palworld. Stranded on the Palpagos Islands, players must build bases, catch pals, and survive the harsh conditions while also learning about the dark mystery behind the island.

This hit game has been subject to criticism and legal troubles, but it just released its 1.0 version, which has gotten fans back into this world, and the best way to play is on Steam. Some of the designs look exactly like Pokémon, but the gameplay is a different experience. Palworld is Pokémon with base building, resource management, bigger boss fights, and gunplay, creating a wild experience that has taken the world by storm.

    ‘Marvel Rivals’ (2024)

Like Counter-Strike 2 and Palworld, some games are still at peak popularity a year or two into their release, and that includes Marvel Rivals. In this hero-based arena shooter, players choose from a selection of Marvel heroes and villains to battle it out for supremacy in a war between Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from 2099.

With more characters and skins being added, Marvel Rivals is an ageless video game that has retained its player base through addictive gameplay and fun characters. However, this game is more than just a shooter with Marvel characters, because the team-up abilities add an extra layer of gameplay that favors strategy and synergistic teamwork, proving it is the most popular game on Steam right now.

    ‘Subnautica 2’ (2026)

Key art for Subnautica 2.Image via Unknown Worlds Entertainment

Subnautica was a fabulous open-world deep-sea explorer that evoked a feeling of wonder and fright as players plunged into new depths. But in 2025, Subnautica 2 was released to the public for early access. A group of players lands on the underwater planet of Proteus to learn about the disappearance of some colonists. From tracking down recordings to repairing a power plant, there is so much to do in this game already.

Subnautica 2 isn’t in a finished state, but it is still one of the best games on Steam right now that lets players swim in the ocean together. Making it multiplayer was a fantastic choice, because gamers can now enjoy the beauty and scariness of the sea together. Having one of the best worlds in video games, exploring is an absolute delight, and fans can get excited knowing there is more content to be released in the future.

‘Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game’ (2026)

Aang and Korra clashing in Avatar Legends: The Fighting GameImage Gameplay Group International

Avatar: The Last Airbender has had a fantastic year in 2026, from the second season of the Netflix live-action show to the sequel film of the original cartoon to the sequel series Avatar: Seven Havens. But the fun doesn’t stop there, as Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is also out, which has players selecting from a roster of fan-favorite characters to duke it out against each other.

This sudden Avatar resurgence is one of the best franchise revivals in a long time, and Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game instantly became an action-packed brawler. Whether players want a casual fighting game experience with great combat or a competitive scene against pro players, this game offers both. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a must-play for fighting game players and Avatar fans because of its authenticity to the franchise, gorgeous 2D art, and excellent mechanics with bending styles.

    ‘Meccha Chameleon’ (2026)

A character hiding in laundry in Meccha ChameleonImage via lemorrion_1224

Every year there is that one cheap video game that is a must-play game, usually having a multiplayer focus. And in 2026, that game is Meccha Chameleon. In it, a group of players is sent out into a world to hide, being able to paint themselves to blend in. A hunter is then set free to find the painted hiders in one of the most fun games of hide-and-seek.

Meccha Chameleon is the must-play game of summer 2026, reeling in millions of fans with its addictive gameplay that try-hards and casuals will both enjoy. It is silly, goofy, and simply a good time with excellent replay value. The best part is that it is fairly cheap, meaning it is a good game to get a lot of hours into compared to the price, making Meccha Chameleon one of the best video games of the year so far.
