According to the North American Final Fantasy XIV Website, Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this August 2026!

Final Fantasy XIV on the go! With a NASTY catch…

The news was delivered by Yoshi-P during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival Keynote. This awesome news comes with a few caveats, though. While you don’t need a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription to play it on Switch 2, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu confirmed, however, that you WILL need a seperate Subscription to play the Switch 2 version ALONG WITH buying the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV and ON TOP of your original FF XIV Subscription. Sheesh!

You wanna get angry at this? Blame Nintendo, as at LEAST Square Enix got PS5, PC, and Xbox players some decent concessions. They are as follows: Those of you already subbed to the game will get 50% off the Switch 2 sub, and ALL players – including new Switch 2 players, will NOT need a Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack/ basic Online Subscription. Yoshida, also worredly, didn’t confirm one way or the other as to whether the expanded free trial set for July 2026 will come to Switch 2.

Yes, those 2 concessions keep me (at least, in my opinion) hyped for Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2. The core problem, though, is that Nintendo has chosen to make you pay for two subscriptions, in order to access one game on one account via one set of servers. If that’s the price we gotta pay to get the game on the platform at all, then… I guess I’m okay with this.

On a significiantly less rantier note, the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV will come with all the expansions up to this point, including the upcoming Evercold expansion set to release in January 2027. The other expansions include A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail.

Ugh Double the subscriptions to get this game on Switch 2 REALLY Nintendo

The Nintendo Switch 2 version is playable in Handheld mode, while having a smooth run of a least 30 FPS. IF the free trial does come to Switch 2, we’ll also be getting the Shadowbringers expansion as of April 28th, 2026.

We are also apparently getting a Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover raid. Here’s some info, according to the Square Enix PR.

    What is EVANGELION?

The television series NEON GENESIS EVANGELION became an immediate and widespread sensation upon its first broadcast in 1995.

In 2007, the series was relaunched as the Rebuild of EVANGELION film series. Conceived, written and directed by Hideaki Anno, EVANGELION: 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 were all hugely successful, captivating new fans and garnering much praise from a wide range of audiences.

The fourth and final film in the series, EVANGELION: 3.0 + 1.0, was released on March 8, 2021, after having been postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It recorded 6.73 million admissions, earning 10.2 billion yen at the box office.

    March 8, 2023, the long-awaited Blu-ray and DVD, EVANGELION: 3.0 + 1.11 THRICE UPON A TIME was released.

October 2025 marked 30 years since the television series debuted, and a celebratory event titled EVANGELION: 30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION was held in Yokohama Arena between February 21 and 23, 2026. Though such an anniversary event was a first for the series, it proved to be a resounding success, attracting a great many visitors from Japan and around the world.

What do you think of this news? Are you excited, or are you disappointed at needing 2 subcriptions and the base game to play on Switch 2? Let us know in the comments below. If you like what I reported, check out this article on Splatoon Raiders coming to Switch 2 on July 23rd.
