Some of us love diving into new worlds so much that we forget about the real one we live in. I feel the same way, which is probably why I’m one of the world’s biggest fans of open-world games. Whether I’m completing mundane daily tasks in a virtual world with better views or becoming a hero made of bricks watching over a plastic city, every open-world gamer can appreciate both experiences. Players get to move at their own pace; usually, interacting with other characters for progression is optional, which allows more time for side quest completion and additional exploration.
May looks like a great month for open-world fans, with several new releases on the horizon. This list highlights upcoming open-world games launching in May 2026, including sequels to beloved classics and never-before-seen indie titles. Whether you are looking for a relaxing adventure around a cozy little village or a more isolating journey requiring focus and caution, there’s something for every type of player. Let us dive into the amazing new open-world releases you’ll be able to enjoy this May.

2026 will be packed with massive open-world games, and these upcoming titles will be among the year’s biggest releases of any genre.

Subnautica 2 (May 14)
Reach Depths That Don’t See The Sun
Starting strong with a truly beloved franchise, we have Subnautica 2! It is now offering a change in playstyle with the addition of multiplayer, where gamers and 3 other friends can dive into the unknown mysteries of the deep blue sea below. Subnautica 2 will be released in early access on May 14th, 2026, on the Steam Store. The game can also be downloaded via Xbox Game Pass for those players who are currently subscribed.
Players have many new things to look forward to with the release of Subnautica 2. We are talking about new submarine attachments that will help our now much larger dive teams either escape treacherous situations, or perhaps just carry more materials from resource runs. Personally, I would appreciate an alternative escape route rather than relying on my legs. Even scarier, larger leviathans that appear to have … eyes in their mouth to know the perfect time to smack their jaws closed on the naive prey inside.

Outbound (May 11)
Who Will Be Your Designated Driver?
If you love cozy adventures as much as I do, Outbound is about to become your next obsession. You get to customize your own campervan and set off on a road trip with the most charming art style I’ve seen in ages. Outbound lands on Steam and Xbox Game Pass on May 11th, 2026. The game mixes in some light puzzle challenges and obstacles (way less stressful than what you’d find in RV There Yet), plus a dash of survival and building. It’s the perfect pick for a laid-back gaming night with up to three friends.
Starting with just a campervan, players will travel across the world, lighting campfires, collecting blueprints, and installing upgrades as they build their dream home on top of it. Designating someone to drive while I sat peacefully on the camper’s roof, tending to my berry bushes, was the highlight of my journey, haha! And be sure to pay attention to just how much you are carrying, or you will end up walking slower than a snail, and be left behind to die in the darkness with no food, trust me. And it’s not like I know from experience or anything.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight (May 22)
An Essential Addition To Everyone’s Library
If you are like me, eagerly waiting to pick up your controller and feel the ultimate freedom of gliding through that massive open world map of Gotham City, then it’s a safe guess that there are many other players like us anticipating the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. With several options available, players can currently pre-purchase either the base game ($69.99) or the deluxe edition ($89.99) on the Steam Store today. Those who choose the deluxe edition will also receive access 3 days before everyone else, making it a truly exclusive experience.
LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight follows the iconic Bruce Wayne on his journey to become Batman. There will be a new combat system to explore, and crimes will be actively discovered as you traverse the map. Familiar locations such as Arkham Asylum may contain the missing piece of information needed to complete a quest. Something different LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers is fewer characters, bringing more focus to building unique relationships, discovering more lore, and meaningful conversations that flow with gameplay.

Paralives (May 25)
What Story Have You Always Dreamed Of Living?
As a lover of The Sims, Paralives is the one game that I have genuinely been waiting for, for years. As I am sure many fellow The Sims players can agree, a life-sim game that offers open-world exploration is both very interesting and also scary. Is this the game that is going to make me abandon The Sims? Releasing on the Steam Store on May 25th, 2026, as an early access experience, Paralives can finally leave the wishlist and join the library.
For those of us who love doing simple tasks and taking risks that we could only dream of taking in the real world, Paralives is an awesome game to consider. Finding a job to support your growing family, and craft your personality as you grow. The ability to interact with almost every store and item is one of the main reasons I want to play. It just adds a whole new level of immersion to the gameplay. There is nothing more worth than seeing a cute market stall, and when you click on it, you realize it’s only for display.

SpaceCraft (May 20)
Calling All Galactic Pioneers
Turning our gaze to the stars, if you have ever found yourself staring into the night sky, wondering what all just might be out there, while simultaneously being so afraid of the unknown, now you can put that curiosity to rest. With SpaceCraft’s planned Steam Store release date of May 20th, 2026, an early access version of the game will be available. For super-eager players, a playtest demo can be tried right now.
In this narrative-driven exploration-adventure, players will have to craft, mine resources, and successfully complete flight trips to sustain their survival. There are many star systems filled with planets to explore, where you can move your custom base if you find somewhere better. Personally, anywhere with cute creatures is where I would be heading. Upgrading your ship is vital to successfully defending against space pirate attacks. If you are looking for a realistic space exploration game with galactic governments and corporations, Spacecraft is perfect for you.
