That RAM crisis, huh? Surely it’ll end sometime soon. Undoubtedly. We’ll all be able to afford technology again, games consoles and computers won’t be only for the 1%, and we can laugh about this silly point in history. Sorry, I’ve just had a note handed to me and, oh, oh no, Lenovo are saying they think that these new astronomically high prices will be the new normal as we enter 2030. Excuse me while I scream into the void for a moment.
Right, I’m back, and I’ll explain all this for you a bit more now. As reported by Computer Base (via Wccftech), Lenovo were presenting at ISC 2026 where they discussed the current price trajectory of DRAM and NAND products. The tech company explained that in spite of DRAM/NAND firms upping their capacities to try and deal with the currency supply-demand issues, none of this will be all that effective, with prices likely not going back to their original levels. Worth noting that this apparently got a laugh out of the crowd as it was presented as a bit of a joke, but the presenter did later explain that higher prices will become the norm as we head into 2030 and beyond.
This isn’t great, obviously! There’ve been some pretty big examples of why it isn’t great recently too. Game preservation site Myrient had to shut down because of the RAM crisis, for one. Valve also finally announced the Steam Machine prices and boy oh boy are they bloody expensive. And no, Valve don’t know if prices will ever go down, even admitting that “some people are going to be priced out.” Oh, and of course, even other tech parts like SSDs are seeing price increases too. Cool!
Lenovo’s comments are just from one tech company, so who knows if things really will be this bad, but it certainly doesn’t seem like prices will come back down anytime soon all the same. Maybe it’s time to listen to Sonic.
