Snipers are officially losing aim assist in Black Ops 7 Ranked Play following a chaotic few days of Call of Duty League (CDL) drama.

Treyarch associate design director Lawrence Metten confirmed on Twitter/X that aim assist will be removed from sniper rifles in Ranked Play, aligning the mode with recent CDL rule changes.

The update mirrors a competitive ruleset tweak that pros only fully realized after briefly agreeing to ban snipers outright.

Why Did the CDL Ban Snipers at Major 1?

During CDL Major 1, sniper rifles were technically in play for Search & Destroy, but under a “Gentleman’s Agreement.” Teams could only use them for two rounds per map, no more.

That informal rule held throughout the event, though it continued to spark debate among players and fans. Some argued snipers were too strong with aim assist active, especially in Search & Destroy, where one pick can swing the entire map.

The situation escalated when pros agreed to ban snipers entirely for a short stretch, removing them from play altogether. That decision, however, did not last long.

Players soon discovered that CDL modes included a “no aim assist” option for sniper rifles, effectively solving the core issue without requiring a full weapon ban. With that in mind, the outright restriction was quickly rolled back.

    Ranked Play Follows CDL

Now, Treyarch has confirmed Ranked Play will adopt the same approach.

By removing aim assist from snipers, Black Ops 7’s competitive ladder will more closely reflect CDL gameplay. It is a significant change, particularly for controller players who relied on rotational assist when holding long angles.

The decision also signals a clearer effort from developers to stay aligned with the professional scene rather than letting Gentleman’s Agreements dictate how the game is played. For years, competitive Call of Duty has relied on unofficial restrictions to balance the meta. In recent titles, the adjustment is happening at a system level.

Whether it fully settles the sniper debate remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: landing those Search & Destroy picks just got much harder.
