Players didn’t get that version until 2024 – 14 years later.

That story says a lot about why Rockstar still hasn’t announced a PC release date for Grand Theft Auto VI. The game is confirmed to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026, but PC remains absent from the release schedule.

According to former Rockstar developer John Ricchio, “The philosophy was always to nail the console version first. Once that’s solid, you expand to PC.”

Speaking on the Kiwi Talkz podcast, Ricchio, who worked at Rockstar between 2003 and 2014 on GTA V, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3, said the studio’s philosophy has always been to build around fixed console hardware first before worrying about the complexity of PC.

Why Rockstar Starts With Consoles

Every PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S shares the same hardware. Developers know exactly how much memory, storage speed and graphics performance they have to work with.

PC is a different challenge altogether. Games must support countless combinations of processors, graphics cards, storage drives and drivers while also meeting expectations for ultrawide displays, high frame rates and mod support.

Ricchio argues “On console, everybody has the same hardware. On PC, you’re supporting thousands of different configurations.”

That approach also reduces the risk of launching a technically unstable console version. Rockstar has experienced the consequences of difficult ports before, with GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition becoming a cautionary tale inside the company.

He said the bigger question during development was always whether building the PC version was the best use of the team’s time while the console game was still unfinished. In that calculation, consoles consistently took priority.

The Delay Also Makes Business Sense

GTA V arrived on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 before reaching PC about 19 months later. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar pattern, launching on consoles first and coming to PC roughly a year later.

For a game expected to become one of the biggest entertainment releases ever, there is little commercial pressure to change a strategy that has repeatedly worked. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly said, “Rockstar Games seeks creative perfection.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean every platform receives equal attention at the same stage of development. Prioritising consoles first remains a deliberate production choice.

Is That Strategy Still Good Enough?

Studios such as Larian have shown that major AAA games can launch across PC and consoles within a much shorter window. Former PlayStation executive Jim Ryan previously said bringing games to PC is “a straightforward decision” as Sony expanded beyond console exclusives.

That makes Rockstar’s approach feel increasingly unusual rather than inevitable. Ricchio’s comments are still valuable because they explain how Rockstar thinks internally. They don’t necessarily prove that simultaneous releases are impossible in 2026.

What This Means for PC Players

Rockstar hasn’t confirmed when GTA 6 will come to PC, or even if it will follow the same timetable as previous games. Based on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, PC players could face another wait of a year or more after the console launch, although Rockstar has announced no official timeline.

At the same time, Rockstar’s record suggests the company values certainty over speed. It would rather perfect one version before expanding to another platform than divide its attention across multiple launches.

Whether players still accept that approach in 2026 is a different question. Rockstar isn’t delaying PC because it can’t build the game. It’s delaying it because, so far, waiting has never stopped millions of players from buying it anyway.

GTA 6 launches on consoles before PC.
