The multiple award-winning Dandara: Trials of Fear Edition is an absolute masterclass in Metroidvania game design. <\/p>\n
Originally released in 2018, this gorgeous game sees you exploring a huge, maze-like environment via an innovative movement mechanic that involves jumping from point to point, gravity be damned. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s available on every platform, but mobile is one of the best thanks to some smartly conceived and slickly executed touch controls.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A super-tricky, surprisingly massive adventure that\u2019s presented with the color palette of a Spectrum game. VVVVVV is a wonder, deep, and tricksy in all the right ways. It left Google Play for a while, but now it\u2019s back in all its splendor and it\u2019s well worth checking out if you haven\u2019t played it before.<\/p>\n
Strictly speaking, Dead Cells is technically a \u2018Roguevania\u2019, but only because developer Motion Twin did such an amazing job with the game that the gaming community has collectively agreed to let the studio coin new words.<\/p>\n
This gripping, endlessly replayableMetroidvania contains roguelike elements, in that each run-through is different, and each one results in death. While you\u2019re alive, though, you\u2019ll occupy hosts, acquire skills, access new areas, and generally have a swell time.<\/p>\n
Robot Wants Kitty has been around for nearly ten years, and it\u2019s still one of our favorite Metroidvanias on mobile. Based on a Flash game of the same name, Robot Wants Kitty sees you collecting kitties.<\/p>\n
You start with an unbelievably limited range of movements and skills, but as you play you upgrade your abilities and acquire new ones, in turn increasing your cat-collecting prowess until your neurons are bursting with pleasure.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The perfect Metroidvania if you want to play, but don\u2019t have hours to sink into the experience. Mimelet is all about stealing the powers of the enemies you encounter, and then using them to reach previously inaccessible parts of the small levels.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s smart, sometimes frustrating, and almost always a massive chunk of fun.<\/p>\n
No list of Metroidvanias would be complete with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, co-parent (along with Super Metroid) of the whole damn genre. Originally released for PS1 in 1997, this platforming masterpiece sees you exploring none other than Dracula\u2019s castle.<\/p>\n
While it inevitably looks a bit dated, and lacks some of the features you\u2019d expect to see in a more recent game, it stands the test of time by essentially creating the timeline.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What if, instead of just becoming reformed by the ghosts of Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge became some avenger of London with spectral aid? Okay, we\u2019re sold. Ebenezer And The Invisible World is a Metroidvania set in Victorian London. Wander the capital\u2019s upper reaches and underworld, and call upon the powers of the spirit world for assistance when mortal skills fail. <\/p>\n
Swordigo is yet another Metroidvania-lite retro action-platformer, but it pulls the formula off with such flair that it\u2019s impossible to hold a grudge.<\/p>\n
Set in a sprawling fantasy gameworld reminiscent of the Zelda games, it sees you running and jumping around, hitting things with a big sword, solving light puzzles, and incrementally acquiring the skills and items you need to push the story forward. Swordigo is the real deal.<\/p>\n
Teslagrad is a stunning example of an indie platformer. Originally released on PC all the way back in 2013, it finally found its way onto the Google Play Store in 2018 and instantly \u2013 ahem \u2013 electrified the Android gaming world.<\/p>\n
The gameplay sees you climbing the Tesla Tower by jumping around, solving puzzles, and acquiring new sciencey abilities to help you access and traverse new areas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Color is overrated. Tiny Dangerous Dungeons, from developer Adventure Islands, goes all the way back to the Game Boy era for its aesthetic inspiration. <\/p>\n
This free-to-play platformer will be over in a couple of hours, but you\u2019ll enjoy every second thanks not only to the authentic \u201890s vibe but to the Metroidvania gameplay, which sees you exploring a huge, open, monster-filled dungeon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Grimvalor, developed by Direlight, a studio founded by the people who made Swordigo. That\u2019s pretty much all you need to know. <\/p>\n
This huge, gorgeous, epic metroidvania sees you hacking and slashing your way through hordes of monsters in a sprawling fantasy world. It won a brace of near-perfect scores and award near-misses, and it boasts an incredible 4.6 average user rating from nearly 50,000 reviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n
ICEY isn\u2019t just a Metroidvania. It\u2019s a meta-Metroidvania.<\/p>\n
Developed by X.D. Network, the acclaimed studio behind Juicy Realm, To the Moon, and Muse Dash. The game sees you exploring a huge sci-fi world while your actions are constantly commented on, undermined, and encouraged by a slippery godlike narrator. It\u2019s a clever and compelling device, complemented by some meaty hack-and-slash action.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A dystopian metroidvania with a striking pixel style and a lot of freedom. Not only does your hookshot let you hop around the ruined world, but you shape your own destiny with a variety of different endings. There are dozens of hours of content here. <\/p>\n
This extremely pretty-looking metroidvania is a very recent port from the world of PC gaming, and its scope definitely shows. The game is very extensive, though a little light on the details of some of the mechanics. For some players, that might be half the fun!<\/p>\n
It\u2019s dark, grim, unforgiving\u2026 and also it\u2019s kind of catholic. Blasphemous is a bloody trip through a medieval-christianity-inspired hellscape of monsters and abominations. Take on the role of the speechless Penient One, don a spiky hat, and set out to take down an unjust god. <\/p>\n
We took Sword Of Xolan off the list to replace it with the spiritual sequel, and overall superior title Vohenn. This fantasy Metroidvania sees you exploring a mysterious island. There\u2019s a lot of options to upgrade your build, and a nice mix of abilities. You can use a controller, too. <\/p>\n
