It’s out now on Steam for both Windows and macOS, and priced at $9.99. There’s a 20% launch discount going on for the first two weeks, and also a free demo if you want to try it beforehand.

The theme focuses on nostalgia and the evolution of gaming history (NES to digital). Also, you face the uphill battle of maintaining a local shop against industry shifts. Across 25 years of actual gaming history, you try to survive while everything around you slowly changes and leaves you behind.

The name Shayou means sunset or decline in Japanese, which is kind of the whole point. Sunset Game Shop Shayou presents the era-appropriate old vibe too, like 8-bit sounds, pixel art, and the Famicom/NES-era aesthetic.

You start during the boom. Then deal with stuff like the rise of CD-ROMs, used-game market chaos, and eventually digital distribution creeping in and messing everything up for small shops. Basically, you live through the phase of all those cosy neighbourhood game stores disappearing.

Gameplay in Sunset Game Shop Shayou

It’s turn-based, where one turn equals one month, and a full run can go for 10+ hours. And things can go very wrong. You constantly make calls with limited info, like trying to predict if a game is going to be huge or totally flop.

It brings real gaming history. You see actual monthly headlines from the years and real events that mess with your business decisions. There are also characters like loyal regulars, rivals, and random visitors.
