At the start of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nintendo Switch Sports Resort <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reveal trailer, a plane flies over the original setting of the series, Wuhu Island, before a pretty faithful logo is shown off, and\u2026oh\u2026the Sportsmates are back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nintendo Switch Sports <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped back in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022, the series\u2019 Miis were mostly replaced by Sportsmates, which are pretty generic avatars with far fewer customization options. They\u2019re kind of cute, sure, but people did not like these guys! The anti-Sportsmates backlash that ensued, paired with the successful release of the Mii-centric <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier this year, rekindled a bit of hope that Miis might start making their way back into the heart of Nintendo games, including whatever entry inevitably came next in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switch Sports <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series. Nope!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nintendo Switch Sports Resort<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems to have the same deal going on: it\u2019s dominated by Sportsmates, but you can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technically <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play as a Mii if you want to. Don\u2019t expect Miis to show up as CPU opponents or anything, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predictably, fans are not happy about the return of the Sportsmates, especially considering the fact that they\u2019re now taking over Wuhu Island. A few of them are even calling the Sportsmates \u201ccolonizers\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Those gremlins culling the original Miis and taking their land. You do not bring back Wuhu Island and then treat the Miis like background extras. Wuhu Island belongs to the Miis. That island has Mii DNA in the pavement. The island\u2019s town has apparently been moved (although some fans are convinced it\u2019s been removed entirely), and its iconic bridge leads to a new archipelago. The whole thing just looks a little empty and flat, though\u2014I can\u2019t seem to spot original landmarks like the hotel, ship, and castle, and not much has been added to take their place.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m stoked to see that my beloved Wuhu Island wasn\u2019t just totally thrown away, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it seems a little soulless now! I\u2019m holding my breath until I get to fly around it myself, though. I mean, if Nintendo\u2019s including a new version of the Island Flyover sport, there have to be <em>some <\/em>neat things to discover, right? <em>Right<\/em>?
