Xbox has delayed Playground Games’ Fable to February 2027.

In a post last week, the company stated that, “in order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players,” it has moved Fable’s release window “so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves.”

Xbox CCO Matt Booty elaborated on the decision during the Xbox podcast, noting that an Autumn launch for Fable would coincide with Grand Theft Auto 6.

“I think it’s cool that one of the biggest entertainment moments of the year is going to be a video game,” said Booty. “But let’s take all of that and put it together of what it really means for us.”

Booty noted that Fable is “in great shape” and emphasised the importance of giving the game “a window all of its own.”

“We really just want it to have its own moment to shine, and related to Fable, we will be seeing more of it in the Xbox Showcase.”

Regarding the Showcase on June 7, Booty clarified that its focus will be on games rather than hardware or strategy.

“There are certainly some strategic things that are out there and things we want to bring clarity to, but the focus here is on the games,” he said. “For the long term, we want to make the right decisions, not fast decisions.”

Playground Games announced Fable’s Autumn 2026 release window in January.

The game was originally planned for 2025 but was delayed “in order to make the best game possible.”

The upcoming Fable is described as a reboot of the franchise, not a remake.

Original developer Lionhead Studios closed in 2016. The last entry, Fable: The Journey, was released in 2012.
