Are you ready to… horse around? What? No, that’s not canned laughter, it’s a live studio audience, it’s funny! Anyway, on to the mane event! Which is the early access launch of a singular game (in our case, anyway) called The Legend of Khiimori, a game that sits perfectly in the centre of a venn diagram that reads “horse girls” on one side and “history buffs” on the other.
In The Legend of Khiimori, you play as a courier on 13th century Mongolia where instead of a Royal Mail red delivery van, you have a horse. The horse is kind of the whole shtick; you train your horses to be the best they can be, you can breed horses so that they gain fancy traits (do you think they have IVs and EVs like in Pokemon? Is this a bit of a niche one?), and you have to care for them of course too, which includes feeding them a good tasty something or other.

It is a survival game of sorts, this is a game set during the 1200s of course, you can’t exactly head to your local Tesco Express to pick up a quick nut bar or something, you’ve also got to forage, hunt, make your own food and tonics for your trusted steed. Route planning sounds like a key part of it too – RPS alum Matt Jarvis quite aptly made a Death Stranding comparison way back when.
The Legend of Khiimori very much sounds like a game for those of you out there that love a systems driven type situation, so best tack that onto the venn diagram too. Of course, this is only the early access version, so for now the systems will be the main driving force as opposed to any big narrative.
This also means that it won’t be feature complete. There is, for example, voice acting (in English and, importantly and appropriately, Mongolian), but not for everything just yet. You can expect additions like falconry, horse racing, a peaceful mode, horse and character customisation, and more breeds somewhere in the future.
