A weird little retro-style game, but with a twist. Started as an NES project on Kickstarter last year, Echoes of the Unread is now heading to PC via Steam. Developed by Clever Cat Games, 8-Bit Legit is the co-publisher alongside Mega Cat Studios.

The team dropped a new trailer, showing the different storybook-style worlds you’ll be running through. The main character, Rhapsody, is trying to escape a weird library and get back home.

The worlds she ends up in are all over the place in a fun way. You’ve got an eerie graveyard, a dusty Wild West town full of sand, some watery fantasy place, and a bunch of other colourful settings.

Let me rewind and tell you the whole story. In Echoes of the Unread, Rhapsody falls asleep while studying in a library. But then, she wakes up inside a strange world where all the books are alive.

And the big gimmick is her voice, because she can literally change the world by singing. That’s how you solve puzzles, deal with enemies, and progress.

To get back home, she has to jump into different stories, basically the themed worlds. There’s Odele, the magician, who’s trying to trap her in the library.

Along the way, you’ll also meet a cowboy, serenade a mermaid, and deal with some annoying ghost. Take a look at the latest trailer below!

Echoes of the Unread is a metroidvania adventure

Since it started as a real NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) game, it’s got an old-school difficulty baked in. There’s even a dedicated Retro Mode if you want it to be extra challenging.

Collecting pages is part of the progress and lets you open up new areas. The more you explore, the stronger your abilities get.

Echoes of the Unread takes books-coming-to-life to the next level! If you’re interested, you can wishlist the game on Steam.
