Bethesda’s most-requested console update for Fallout 4 finally has a delivery date: May 27, 2026. The Creations storage expansion — originally promised for November 2025, then pushed past December, then indefinitely postponed — arrives tomorrow on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. For Xbox Series X|S owners, the change is transformative. For PlayStation players, the improvement is real but bounded by a Sony policy that has constrained console modding since 2016.

The numbers define the divide. Xbox Series X|S storage jumps from 2 GB to up to 100 GB — a 50-fold increase. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One receive an increase from 1–2 GB to approximately 15 GB. Bethesda confirmed both figures in its official announcement but offered no public explanation for the 85 GB gap between its current-generation console platforms.

Before anything else, though: if you have an active Fallout 4 console save older than November 10, 2025, you need to archive your load order before tomorrow’s update. Bethesda warns the storage migration is expected to reset existing mod configurations, and those saves are “expected to be impacted.” The fix takes two minutes in the Creations menu — skip it and you may need to rebuild your mod list from scratch.

Why Fallout 4 Xbox Mod Storage Hits 100 GB While PS5 Stays at 15 GB

The explanation traces back nine years. When Bethesda launched console mod support for Fallout 4 in 2016, Sony required that PlayStation mods use only assets already present in the base game — no external textures, no new models, no custom audio. Microsoft imposed no equivalent restriction on Xbox. That policy difference set the original PS4 storage ceiling at 900 MB, compared to 2 GB on Xbox One, and it has never been formally reversed.

The consequence for 2026 is architectural. Xbox Series X|S, running on Microsoft’s platform with no external-asset prohibition, can absorb a scalable 100 GB pool. PS5, still bound by Sony’s in-game-asset rule, tops out at 15 GB — enough for a meaningful modded playthrough but not enough for large-scale total-conversion projects, high-resolution texture overhauls, or the sprawling new-land mods that have defined Fallout 4‘s long life on PC. Neither Bethesda nor Sony has indicated whether the PlayStation cap will increase further.

What Fallout 4 PS5 Mod Storage Limit Means in Practice

For PlayStation players, 15 GB is a genuine improvement over 2 GB. It accommodates a wide range of quality-of-life mods, gameplay overhauls, and smaller content packs that were previously impossible to stack simultaneously. What it does not accommodate is the category of ambitious total-conversion projects — mods such as Fallout: London, a full-scale, game-sized conversion that the development team is now evaluating for Xbox console viability following the resolution of the Series X|S storage constraint. That evaluation is still pending Sony’s separate platform conditions, and no PlayStation announcement has been made.

How Fallout 4 Console Mods Compare to PC After the Update

PC players have never faced a storage ceiling for Fallout 4 mods. The game launched on PC in November 2015 and has been supported by an open modding ecosystem ever since. Xbox Series X|S, with 100 GB of Creations storage, now operates meaningfully closer to that PC baseline — high-fidelity texture packs, comprehensive system overhauls, and multi-gigabyte new-land expansions are all viable for the first time on console. PS5 occupies a middle tier: better than its prior position, but still separated from PC-grade modding by Sony’s longstanding content policy.

Fallout 4 first released in November 2015 and received its next-generation console update — adding 4K resolution and 60 fps on current-gen hardware — in April 2024. The Creations system, rebranded from the earlier Creation Club in December 2023, combines free community mods with paid content through Bethesda’s in-game storefront.

Back Up Your Load Order Before the May 27 Update

Bethesda’s advisory is specific: players on any console with save files older than November 10, 2025 should archive their mod load order before downloading the update. To do so, open Fallout 4, navigate to the Creations menu, select the Load Order Menu, and choose “Load Order Archive.” Then select “Save Load Order to Bethesda.net.” After the update installs, return to the same menu and choose “Restore Load Order from Bethesda.net” to recover your configuration in one step. Players who skip this risk a reset load order and will need to re-download and re-configure mods manually.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Xbox getting more Fallout 4 mod storage than PS5?

Microsoft imposes no restrictions on external mod assets for Xbox, while Sony has required since 2016 that all PlayStation mods use only assets already present in the base game. That constraint limits both mod complexity and the storage allocation Bethesda can offer on PlayStation platforms. Bethesda provided no additional explanation for the 85 GB gap in its May 2026 announcement.

How do I save my Fallout 4 load order before the update?

In Fallout 4, open the Creations menu, select the Load Order Menu, and tap “Load Order Archive.” Choose “Save Load Order to Bethesda.net” to back it up to the cloud. After the May 27 update, return to the same location and select “Restore Load Order from Bethesda.net” to recover your full configuration automatically.

What is the Fallout 4 Creations storage expansion?

The Creations storage expansion is a Bethesda update arriving May 27, 2026 that dramatically increases how much mod content console players can install in Fallout 4. Xbox Series X|S storage rises from 2 GB to up to 100 GB. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One storage rises from 1–2 GB to approximately 15 GB.

Will PS5 ever get more than 15 GB of Fallout 4 mod storage?

Bethesda has not announced any further increase for PlayStation beyond the 15 GB ceiling confirmed for May 27. As of that announcement, no timeline or commitment for an additional PlayStation storage expansion exists.
