Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers just received a significant change, as Nintendo demonstrated a key difference that separates the new design from its predecessor. However, the updated Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller should not fare any differently from previous iterations in terms of functionality.

The Joy-Con controller lineup has been a staple of Nintendo’s accessory repertoire since 2017. The original Joy-Con was noted for its small form factor and ability to be used when either attached to or detached from the Switch console. This controller was later succeeded by the Joy-Con 2, which came in a larger size and new functions like mouse mode. Additional Joy-Con color variants have since been released for players to pick from.

Although the Joy-Con controllers have been the subject of scrutiny throughout the years, some users now have access to an updated design. Nintendo quietly revealed that, moving forward, Joy-Con sold in Europe will have Phillips (cross-head) screws rather than Y-head screws. These updated Joy-Con will have a model number ending in (-01). Nintendo stated that this change will allow users to officially replace the controller’s battery on their own. The company also shared a step-by-step guide on replacing the Joy-Con controller’s battery with an official replacement kit, which will come with all necessary tools. Nintendo confirmed that the changes were made to comply with EU battery regulations that will go into effect in February 2027. To clarify, this change is to the Joy-Con for the original Switch, which is compatible with Switch 2.

Nintendo revealed that the updated Joy-Con controllers will be available in Neon Blue (left) and Neon Red (right) from the Nintendo Store starting July 16. Additional colors will be released throughout the year at different intervals, though the company did not elaborate further. The Joy-Con battery replacement kit will be available as a separate purchase from the Nintendo Store at a later date. This updated controller was revealed after Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 1 console lineup will be discontinued across Europe in March 2027 due to the battery regulations. However, the Switch 2 is compatible with most Switch 1 games and accessories, including the Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

The controller update in Europe came weeks before the price of the Switch 2 goes up on September 1, from $449.99 to $499.99 before taxes and fees are applied. Ahead of the price hike, Nintendo released a Switch 2 Choose Your Game bundle that allows users to pick either Pokemon Pokopia, Mario Kart World, or Donkey Kong Bananza as a digital pack-in-game. It is unclear if the bundle will be available after the Switch 2 price hike goes into effect, so interested users should act quickly.

Earlier in July, Nintendo confirmed that Switch 2 consoles and controllers sold in Europe will receive similar battery replacement updates across the continent. The updated console will be released in the fall of 2026, while the updated Joy-Con 2 controllers and Switch 2 Pro Controller will be available in the winter.
