2026 is starting to ramp towards an insane Fall of video game releases. August has some amazing games. Our runner-up this month is a bit of a cheat. There are several huge games making their debut on the Switch 2, including: Final Fantasy XIV, Lies of P, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Elden Ring. Without further ado, here are the Top 5 Upcoming Video Games August 2026:
5. The Sinking City 2 – August 18
The Sinking City 2 is the sequel to The Sinking City. Developer, Frogware, is known for the Sherlock Holmes games. The original Sinking City used Sherlock Holmes’ gameplay as a base to tell an H.P. Lovecraft 1920s detective story. This sequel will still be an open world third person adventure game, but will have a stronger emphasis on survival horror mechanics. The Sinking City 2 is a clear #5 on the Top 5 Upcoming Video Games August 2026, way ahead of its competition. It will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
4. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy – August 27
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel to the Plague Tale cinematic third person adventure games. The prior games had an emphasis on stealth mechanics, but Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy promises to be more action-focused. The story will have multiple playable timelines. Because A Plague Tale: Requiem performed beyond expectations, and was nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, this newest entry ranks handsomely on the Top 5 Upcoming Video Games August 2026. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
3. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls – August 6
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a new fighting game from Arc System Works, developers of the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series. They also developed the beloved Persona 4 Arena, and Dragon Ball FighterZ games. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4 vs 4 tag fighter featuring Marvel characters with ultra modern anime designs. A new Arc System Works fighting game is always cause for celebration. Combine that with the Marvel universe IP and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a serious contender for the top spot on the Top 5 Upcoming Video Games August 2026. It will be available for PS5 and PC.
2. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 – August 27
After three long years since Vol. 1 came out, we are finally getting Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. It’s a collection of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. The real star of this collection is finally getting access to Metal Gear Solid 4 on modern consoles. Fans of Metal Gear Solid V will also be able to put together some missing essential story pieces by playing Peace Walker. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is another major contender for the top spot on the Top 5 Upcoming Video Games August 2026. It will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC.
1. Beast of Reincarnation – August 4
It’s rare that a brand new IP takes the top spot on a list like the Top 5 Upcoming Video Games August 2026. But Beast of Reincarnation is an action JRPG, with triple A aesthetics, made by Game Freak, the developers of Pokémon. The story is about a post-apocalyptic Japan, where the player controls a warrior and her dog. Not a lot is known about Beast of Reincarnation, but it could seriously end up being the biggest release of the year. Beast of Reincarnation will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
