Yoshi’s next platforming adventure takes players inside the pages of a living encyclopedia filled with creatures waiting to be discovered.

Nintendo has given Super Mario fans plenty to talk about this week. Just hours after confirming that actor Donald Glover will voice the iconic dinosaur Yoshi in the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the company has now revealed when players can jump into Yoshi’s next adventure. The new platformer, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, will launch exclusively for Switch 2 on Thursday, 21 May.

Nintendo shared the announcement first through its Nintendo Today app before posting it across social media in celebration of Mario Day, the annual fan event held on 10 March, a date that resembles “Mar10”, or March 10.

Alongside the announcement, the company released a fresh trailer showing a deeper look at the game’s mechanics and the strange world waiting inside its magical pages.

Nintendo reveals new gameplay and characters in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

The new trailer introduces players to Mr. E, a talking encyclopedia whose pages contain strange creatures and unfamiliar environments. By diving into the book itself, Yoshi enters these pages as an inky version of the dinosaur, exploring each entry and interacting with the animals found within.

Naturally, some of that interaction involves Yoshi’s trademark appetite. As the trailer shows, Yoshi leaps into the pages to observe the creatures, which often means swallowing them.

One moment highlights a frog that Yoshi initially eats before deciding it “isn’t particularly tasty”. After being spat out, the frog returns the favour by blowing bubbles that Yoshi can hop into and ride through the level.

Feeding the frogs different foods will produce different types of bubbles, allowing players to experiment with platforming routes and discover new information about each creature. The trailer also reveals that players will be able to name the species themselves, adding a playful twist to the discovery system.

As Yoshi progresses deeper into the book, more environments and additional creatures will appear, expanding the range of ecosystems players can explore and document. The trailer ends with a brief reveal that Bowser Jr. will also play a role in the story, hinting that Yoshi’s research expedition may not stay peaceful for long.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 on 21 May.
