Out of all the video game genres, RPGs are the ones that change and evolve the most. Because of how broad the space is, there is so much room for innovation and new ideas to blossom, and over the past few months, it has become pretty clear that the push for revolution is far from slowing down.

2026 has already proved itself as an incredible year for gaming across the board, but when zooming in on RPGs specifically, the level of quality and the amount of progress made is pretty hard to match elsewhere in the industry. Whether players are interested in turn-based strategies or real-time action, there is bound to be a new game unlike anything they have experienced before.
The focus is on incredible RPGs that were released earlier in the year; however, we are going to include two upcoming titles that have 2026 release dates.

Esoteric Ebb approaches role-playing from an unusual angle by emphasizing flawed characters rather than power fantasies. Conversations branch heavily based on personality traits, social awkwardness, and failed interactions, turning otherwise game-breaking mistakes into meaningful outcomes instead of punishments that keep the story progressing forward at all times.
The detective-inspired structure also shifts focus away from constant combat, adding a more psychological element to the gameplay that allows it to stand out from the crowd of more action-heavy titles. From my time playing, I have been pleasantly surprised by how well-thought-out the contradictory and failed paths are, and at no point have I felt like I needed to replay a segment, at least until my second playthrough.
Escape from Ever After

Escape from Ever After uses classic fairy tale imagery to explore themes of exploitation, corporate control, and social collapse, all whilst keeping things light and funny throughout. Fantasy worlds may normally be treated as a form of escapism, but here, they are reframed as worlds shaped by economics and power structures, bringing them closer in line with reality, and letting players engage with both sides at once.

Mechanically, I found myself constantly smiling, as one minute you’re platforming across a lake of ice, and the next, fighting a giant boss in turn-based combat, so no matter how far into the game you progress, you will always end up with a new way to play. Because of the constant structural shift, the game feels fairly experimental, yet unlike many other failed attempts, it sticks the landing and manages to retain its satirical identity, even when exploring the more serious ideas.

If I had to describe Mewgenics in one word, it would be bonkers. The gameplay loop boils down to breeding cats and taking them on a series of action-packed adventures, but as things often do in an Edmund McMillen game, nothing ever goes to plan. Those early hours were filled with countless “what the?” and “that’s how that works?, as just when you think you’ve got a grasp on the basics, the game throws another curveball your way.
As the game goes on, players will gain access to new classes, each inspired by classic D&D archetypes like fighters and mages, and as the house begins to fill up with more and more cats, the eugenics side of the game starts to get pretty out of control. A roguelite at heart with an incredibly unique take on the RPG genre, if you’re looking for a new gaming addiction, I guarantee Mewgenics is what you need.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection expands the Monster Hunter universe even further through a far more narrative-driven experience that feels more accessible and streamlined than ever. Bonding with monsters has become a much more integral part of the gameplay, as it directly influences the player’s combat abilities, traversal, and strategic options across the entire world.
One of the biggest things I noticed is the way the environments are decided, being semi-open world rather than completely limitless, which keeps the stream of content much more cohesive, whilst still leaving plenty of room for exploration. In a lot of ways, it brings monster-collecting RPGs toward a more modern feeling place, where the action is more responsive, and there are fewer barriers in your way when it comes to actually becoming immersed in the story.
Crimson Desert
What Doesn’t This Game Have?

Before Crimson Desert even launched, players were calling it a revolutionary RPG that would shake up the entire open-world space going forward. Now that the game is out in the wild, it is safe to say that, for the most part, that claim came true, as it is pretty hard to find a mechanic, idea, or gameplay style that doesn’t exist in the world.

Scale is the big draw, as once you unlock a bit of mobility and can take to the skies, the level of freedom is virtually unmatched within the genre. I was taken aback at just how much content and how many things there were to do, and I would spend hours fighting mobs and bosses, then planting crops, and even petting a few cats along the way. As far as modern open-world games go, Crimson Desert is certainly leading the charge.

Phantom Blade Zero may look like just another Eastern soulslike, but the combat, the story, and the worldbuilding are far from typical. Playing as Soul, you only have 66 days to live, and in that time, players need to fight their way through virtually anything that moves, clashing blades and leaping into action to uncover the truth behind the death sentence.
The reason the game looks so unique is its dedication to combat styles and the inspirations that guide them. Based on authentic Kungfu and Wuxia styles, players get to use a variety of different weapons, each with their own movesets and combos, and without being tied down to one specific path, they are free to take on the role of a true warrior fighting till their last breath.
Beast of Reincarnation

Game Freak may mostly be known for a small franchise of games called Pokemon, yet now, it is branching out into new territory with its latest project, Beast of Reincarnation. The world is stunning and combines technology and nature into one, where everything from the environment to the creatures within it is coated in contradictions, creating a unique aesthetic that leans into the apocalyptic nature of the universe.
From a gameplay perspective, players will get to use both real-time and turn-based combat to take on the mountainous threats that stand before them, but luckily, they won’t have to do it alone, with their trusty dog Koo at their side, who will help them when the battle starts to get tough. I, for one, am incredibly hyped, as I love it when games blend genres, and I am always on the lookout for new ARPGs that really break the mold.
