Sulphur is one of the first progress-gated materials in Subnautica 2. Here’s how to get it.
One of the first materials you’ll likely really have trouble finding in Subnautica 2 is Sulphur. Unlike everything else in the early game, you can’t simply explore and run across it. You need a special set of upgrades and circumstances to even get a little. Here’s how.
How to get Sulphur in Subnautica 2

You can only find Sulphur on the rocks around superheated thermal vents in the areas east of the Lifepod. The first area where you can gather it is about 300 meters east of the Lifepod.
You’ll need the heat adaptation from the third Angel Comb to even go there safely, but once you have it, you can gather dozens of units of Sulphur from the rocks there.

Sulphur itself is a dull yellow rocky growth you can find all over the hot water zone. In this early area, there are several Sulphur deposits you can break with your hand for two units of the material. There are also larger outcroppings that require the Sonic Resonator to crack.
The second major source of Sulphur in Subnautica 2 is much further east, beneath the research outpost labeled “Alien Ruins.” You’ll need to get past the squid-like leviathan to reach it, but once you do reach the outpost, you’ll quickly find that Sulphur is in no short supply.

You’ll find a large magma vent cave about 50 meters southeast of the outpost, and the cave is absolutely chock-full of Sulphur (and Gold, as it happens).

Setting up a Scanner module will also allow you to search for Sulphur deposits within 300 meters of said Scanner, though that’s only necessary if you exhaust the massive supply in the caves.

John’s been gaming for almost 30 years, starting with Super Mario 64, but his first real love is Final Fantasy. Or Armored Core, depending on how he slept last night. If you want to know where to find an item in a massive open world or how to beat a boss, he can help. They’ve probably kicked his teeth in a few times already. You can normally find him eyes deep in the latest FromSoftware game if he isn’t doing dailies in the half-dozen live service games he plays. He can be found on BlueSky.
